Nappy rash in summer: how to prevent it and care for baby's skin
Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy with the little ones, but the heat can also make some skin discomforts more frequent. One of them is nappy rash, an irritation that can appear when baby's skin remains in contact with moisture, urine, or faeces for too long.
Although it is usually mild, preventing it and acting at the first symptoms will help keep baby's skin healthy and comfortable.

Why does nappy rash increase in summer?
Heat makes babies sweat more and the nappy area stays wet for longer.
How to recognise nappy rash?
The most common sign is redness of the skin in the area covered by the nappy.
Other signs that may appear:
- Irritation.
- Sensitivity.
- Small spots.
- Drier or flaky skin.
- Discomfort during nappy changes.
If the irritation worsens, spreads, significant lesions appear, or does not improve with usual care, it is advisable to consult the paediatrician.
And if we are at the beach or pool?
During holidays it is important to maintain the same care routines.
After bathing:
- Change the wet nappy as soon as possible.
- Rinse the skin if necessary.
- Pat dry carefully.
- Use a clean, dry nappy.
Specific swim nappies are designed for use during bathing, but they do not replace the regular nappy and should not be kept on for long periods out of the water.
When should we consult?
Consult the paediatrician if:
- The irritation worsens rapidly.
- Blisters or wounds appear.
- There is discharge or signs of infection.
- The area has very intense lesions.
- It does not improve after several days of care.
- The baby has fever or other symptoms.
Prevention starts with small gestures
