Autumn hair loss: why does it fall more and what can we do?
September arrives, we return to our routine and, almost at the same time, we start finding more hair than usual in the shower, on the brush, or on the pillow.
Is it normal for hair to fall out more in autumn? In many cases, yes.
Hair continuously goes through different phases of growth, rest, and shedding. Hair loss is part of its natural cycle and does not necessarily mean there is a health problem. In fact, the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology notes that an increase in hair loss may occur in autumn as part of the normal hair renewal process.

Why does hair fall more in autumn?
Hair does not grow indefinitely. Each hair follicle goes through different phases and, when its cycle ends, the hair sheds to make way for a new one.
This renewal process may become more noticeable in autumn. That is why noticing more hair on the brush for a few weeks does not necessarily mean we are developing alopecia.
Furthermore, during summer, hair and the scalp are exposed to factors that can affect their appearance: sun, chlorine, seawater, heat, sweat, or increased use of heat styling tools.
How much hair loss is normal?
Daily hair loss can vary considerably from person to person. The AEDV explains that losing approximately 50 to 100 hairs per day can be part of the normal cycle, although the amount may be greater at certain times.
That is why, rather than counting each hair we lose, it is important to observe the overall trend.
When should we worry?
It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if:
- Hair loss is very heavy and persists for several weeks or months.
- Clearly thinning areas appear.
- The scalp presents intense itching, flaking, inflammation, or other alterations.
- Hair loses density progressively.
- Hair loss appears after an illness, significant weight loss, a period of intense stress, or other relevant circumstances.
Hair loss can have many causes and there are different types of alopecia. That is why not all require the same treatment.
What can we do to care for our hair in autumn?
Although there is no cosmetic product that can prevent all types of hair loss on its own, we can care for our hair and scalp through proper habits.
1. Use products suitable for your hair
Choose shampoos and hair products adapted to the characteristics of your scalp and hair.
2. Avoid excessive heat
Hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons used at high temperatures can damage the hair fibre.
3. Watch your diet
A varied and balanced diet is important for maintaining good general health and also for hair.
4. Do not take supplements on your own
Taking vitamins or food supplements without knowing the cause of hair loss is not always the best option. The AEDV recommends assessing the problem and following professional advice before starting treatments.
5. Consult if hair loss persists
If hair loss continues or is especially intense, it is advisable to consult to determine its cause.
